Reading a ship like the trade does
Guest count decides more than any amenity list: which harbors the ship can enter, whether disembarkation is a stroll or a queue, and how much of the itinerary you spend in tender lines. Crew ratio predicts service texture better than any review. Space per guest — cabin size times public-space share — predicts whether the ship feels calm at capacity. All three are published per ship on operator sites, which is where our comparison method sends you, because the brand average hides the fleet's worst ship.

Which cruise lines are considered true luxury?
The names consistently placed in the luxury tier by the trade are small-ship, inclusive-fare operators — Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea, Crystal, Explora Journeys, and at the top end the yacht-scale products like Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. We list them here as the recognized set, not as a ranking: we have not verified each line's current claims against its own pages yet, and this page will say so per line until we have. The tier test matters more than the names: largely-inclusive fare, hundreds not thousands of guests, high crew ratio.
What is the difference between luxury and premium cruise lines?
Premium lines (the tier of Celebrity, Princess, Holland America and peers) run bigger ships with better-than-mass-market product, monetized through extras: drinks packages, specialty dining, excursions, gratuities. Luxury lines price most of that in. Comparing a €4,000 premium fare against a €7,000 luxury fare is meaningless until you build the total trip cost both ways — the gap routinely halves, and for heavy consumers of the extras it can invert.
How do I compare two luxury lines for the same route?
Ignore adjectives; extract numbers. Guests and crew aboard the specific ship (not the brand average). Exactly which excursion tier, drinks tier, and gratuities the fare includes. Cabin square meters including veranda. Port time versus sea days on the actual itinerary. And the solo supplement or third-guest policy if either applies to you. Every one of those lives on the operator's site, and an hour with two tabs open beats any listicle — including this site's.
